How ranking works
The Build Nation never ranks people by likes, followers or how much they post. This page explains, in plain words, what the app actually uses today.
Who you see first
When you open Who to meet, The Build Nation orders builders for you by a few things:
- Your field. People in the same field as you come first, then people in a related field.
- Where you both are. Builders at a stage that makes for a useful conversation with you rank higher.
- Who you've saved. Builders in the same fields as the people you've saved to your list get a smaller nudge.
- What they've done lately. Among people who match you, those with recent results on The Build Nation rank a little higher: products they launched, “Shipped:” updates, meetups they hosted where people met, and events they hosted. Recent work counts more, each kind is capped so posting more doesn't help, and results can only lift a good match, never replace it.
Each card says why, for example “Same field: Fintech”. Only accounts with a verified email appear, and someone you've blocked, or who has blocked you, never does.
What counts as proof of work
Every builder profile shows proof of work: an 18-week grid of real output and a count of things shipped. It counts:
- Products you've launched (a build you mark as launched).
- Updates you post that start with “Shipped:”, “Building:” or “Win:”. “Shipped:” posts also count toward things shipped.
- Meetups you hosted that actually started.
- Meetups you attended where both you and the host confirmed you met.
- Event check-ins.
What doesn't count
Likes, comments, views, follows and follower counts never count. Neither does how much you post: only updates that report output (Shipped, Building, Win) appear on the grid. Meeting people in person shows on your profile, but it doesn't change where you rank.
How it's checked
- Met in person takes both people. After a meetup ends, the host and the attendee each confirm whether they met. Only those two people can confirm, and it counts only when both say yes.
- “Shows up” waits for a track record. It appears only after someone has attended three meetups, so one missed meetup doesn't define a new member.
- Nothing counts twice. Things shipped is launched products plus “Shipped:” posts that aren't about one of those launched products.
- Field and stage are yours to set. They come from your profile; your proof of work is the record that backs them up.
How gaming is limited
- You can't confirm a meetup on your own: it takes the other person too, and tapping again doesn't count twice.
- Posts go live right away, and anyone can report one. Our team reviews reports and can remove a post, close a meetup or ban an account. A removed post no longer counts.
- Block someone and you no longer appear in each other's lists.
- Likes and followers can't be farmed for rank, because they never count.
